Tamarack Water Alliance
Tamarack Water Alliance is a group of local residents and landowners working together with others from across Minnesota and Northern Wisconsin to protect water and community health through education. Specifically, we are concerned about the dangers of high sulfide mining that threaten our beloved rivers, lakes and wild rice beds in northeastern Minnesota, impacting communities situated along the Mississippi, St. Croix/Kettle River, St. Louis River and Lake Superior.
A proposal by Talon Metals/Rio Tinto, foreign owned entities, to build a high sulfide mining operation near Tamarack in Aitkin County threatens the health of many communities in Northeastern Minnesota and Northern Wisconsin with both air and water pollution. This mine threatens 1855 Treaty Rights and the long-term economic and cultural security of nearby native and rural communities. This kind of sulfide mining, especially in water-rich environments, has never been done without severe impacts to water and to the health of those who live downstream.
Three main rivers flow near the proposed Talon mine and would transport sulfide pollution through interconnected waterways along the Mississippi, St. Louis, and St. Croix/Kettle Rivers. Toxic heavy metal dust and sulfates from mining operations and gases from daily blasting would create air pollution and be blown in the prevailing winds 30 to 100 miles or more. The potential transport by ship of high sulfide ore from the Duluth-Superior docks to Marquette, Michigan would challenge the ongoing clean up of the St. Louis River Estuary, the nation's largest fresh water estuary, slowly recovering from 100 years of industrial pollution.
